Join us for a panel conversation with exhibiting artist, Marietta Patricia Leis, alongside architect and DNCA founder Devendra Contractor, and Head of Curatorial Affairs at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Merry Scully. Leis’s work is evocative of place and the senses tied to them, situated in the vortex of light, color, minimalism, and expression. The conversation will address themes of place, perception, beauty, and loss as found in Leis’ body of work and the exhibition, Marietta Patricia Leis: Sense Memories.

Marietta Patricia Leis

Marietta Patricia Leis is a visual artist and poet, whose exhibitions frequently include texts of her poetry. Her books of poetry, Pausing: A Book of Reflections in Art and Poetry (2017) and the newly released Engrained include her visual art and are available for purchase at CCA. Her work is currently on view in Marietta Patricia Leis: Sense Memories at Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe CCA through March 20th, 2022.

Devendra Contractor has been a resident of Santa Fe and Albuquerque since 1974, He is an architect and the founding principal of the architectural studio DNCA. DNCA has designed many of the gallery buildings in the Railyard, the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, and the New Mexico Museum of Art’s Vladem Contemporary in Santa Fe. Devendra has a background in the liberal arts from St. John’s College, and over 40 years of experience in design and construction. In 2021, Alina Boyko and Devendra, launched Pie Projects, a contemporary gallery in Santa Fe’s Baca Railyard in a complex on Shoofly Street designed by DNCA.

Merry Scully is currently the Head of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Contemporary Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art. Merry Scully she has been a curator for exhibitions of contemporary and historic art, photography and design in locations across the country including the New Mexico Museum of Art, San Francisco Art Institute, and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Previously positions include curator of the Governor’s Gallery for Bill and Barbara Richardson and curator of Special Projects at the New Mexico Museum of Art.  Prior to moving to New Mexico she was Director of Exhibitions and the Associate Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs at the San Francisco Art Institute and Administrative Director for the Fellows of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
