Sean Price Williams’ (celebrated cinematographer for the Safdie Brothers, Michael Almereyda & Alex Ross Perry) directorial debut, The Sweet East, is a picaresque journey through contemporary America written by film critic Nick Pinkerton. In this “riotous Alice in Wondermerica” road trip comedy starring Talia Ryder, we follow a high school senior from South Carolina who gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C. Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured fairy tale travelogue, where she is granted access to a variety of the strange factions and cults that proliferate the present-day unreality of contemporary life.

Shot on 16mm film, this post-ironic Americana exposé exhibits Williams’ “trademark, rough-hewn visuals with errant lens flares and crummy locales giving way to unexpected bursts of beauty,” says critic Sean Burns. “It’s raggedy and uneven, but also engaged with the grim realities of contemporary life in ways we seldom see at the cinema anymore, especially not in arthouses. Having just sat through a slew of saccharine Sundance titles that amounted to little more than well-meaning affirmations and group hugs, I was re-energized by the rudeness and impropriety of The Sweet East. It feels sincere.”

“This gonzo coming-of-age adventure film plays like a punk take on Alice in Wonderland, it’s unhinged and undeniably a future cult favorite.”  – Morgan Rojas, Cinemancy
