Fatman with Edith,

Santa Fe, New Mexico – July 21, 2023

The Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) is pleased to invite the public to its galleries to view photoworks from Meridel Rubenstein’s Critical Mass between July 25 and August 16 in association with CCA’s 35mm debut of Christopher Nolan’s hit film, Oppenheimer. This exhibition signals CCA’s renewed commitment to visual arts programming and collaborations with Chatter.

Critical Mass is a major, poetic, thought-provoking multi-media artwork that examines the impact that the weapon developed by the Manhattan Project had upon the scientists who created it, the nearby community of San Ildefonso Pueblo, and the global community.

Rubenstein, a Santa Fe artist, created Critical Mass between 1989 and 1993 with her collaborators, Ellen Zweig and Steina and Woody Vasulka – a critically acclaimed exhibition that toured the United States. CCA’s current exhibition of Critical Mass will be the first time in decades that the majority of this extraordinary work will be on public view. Read more about Critical Mass and Meridel Rubinstein here.

Critical Mass is being shown in two locations on the CCA campus – in the Cinema Gallery through the main door to the cinema box office and in the large Munoz/Waxman Gallery where Chatter performs its weekly concerts.
