Instead, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors favors magical realism with Ukrainian religion and folklore expressed through highly symbolic artistic styles. The multiple award-winning film is considered “a timeless Carpathian story” following a young man, Ivan, as he falls in love with the daughter of his father’s killer among the Hutsul people of Ukraine.
