Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

Sunday, May 22 | 4 pm | $15-$50 Sliding Scale
Co-presented with Ukrainian Americans of New Mexico

Sergei Parajanov’s 1965 masterpiece was a controversial departure from the then Soviet-sanctioned socialist realism aesthetic. Instead, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors favors magical realism with Ukrainian religion and folklore expressed through highly symbolic artistic styles. The multiple award-winning film is considered “a timeless Carpathian story” following a young man, Ivan, as he falls in love with the daughter of his father’s killer among the Hutsul people of Ukraine.

CCA is partnering with Ukrainian Americans of New Mexico (UANM), with proceeds benefiting the organization that provides frontline medical supplies and assists refugees in the region. Prior to the screening, members of UANM will speak to the organization’s mission and Ukrainian embroidery as the event shortly follows World Vyshyvanka Day.

… Overwhelmingly beautiful …
