Artist Matt Furie’s well-intentioned comic creation, Pepe the Frog, rocket-launched into meme-stardom as a funny, relatable icon. In one of the strangest twists in pop-cultural history, the internet’s “happiest little frog” became a symbol for white supremacy seemingly overnight. Winner of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival Emerging Filmmaker Award, the documentary chronicles Furie’s quest to reclaim his Pepe the Frog character and transform him into a symbol of acceptance and hope.
