Women’s Rebel Voices Concert: The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane

June 4 @ 6:00 pm

Please join us at on Thursday, June 4, 6:00pm , at CCA’s Munoz Waxman Gallery. The evening starts with a “Women’s Rebel Voices” music set with Lara Manzanares, followed by a film screening and Q&A with Lara and Maureen Gosling on arts and activism as depicted through the lens of the amazing life of Barbara Dane. Your Ticket purchase gets you into to BOTH events, the concert, and the film screening with Q&A.

Barbara Dane: Pete Seeger mentored her, Bob Dylan peddled his songs to her, Louis Armstrong discovered her, Bonnie Raitt was inspired by her. She launched the career of the Chambers Brothers, helped shape Jane Fonda’s politics –why isn’t Barbara Dane a household name? Folk, blues and jazz singer, international social justice activist and recording star, wife, mother of three, feminist, record producer, unwavering maverick and general troublemaker. From the British Academy Award-winning co-director of BURDEN OF DREAMS, THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE uncovers the surprisingly overlooked story of a trailblazing woman who chose conscience over fame, turning setbacks into opportunities, paving her own way with her art. Standing strong with her singular confidence, Dane emanated the people-powered connectivity of folk, the defiance of blues and the elemental cool of jazz while propelling major historic events with boldness and subversion that cut through commercial artifice and earned her a 4” FBI file. THE 9 LIVES OF BARBARA DANE reveals an outspoken and tireless artist whose dedication to music and social justice embodies the energy and spirit of American dissent.

With years of involvement in American roots music, film, and social justice, director Maureen Gosling and producer Jed Riffe have crafted a memorable film that chronicles a trailblazing woman who chose conscience over fame, transforming setbacks into opportunities and forging her own path through art. With singular confidence, Barbara Dane emanated the people-powered connectivity of folk, the defiance of blues, and the elemental cool of jazz—using music as a force for change and earning a four-inch FBI file along the way.

NOTE: The concert event at 6pm in the Waxman Gallery has a higher capacity than the CCA cinema theater. Only the first 100 patrons from the concert will be admitted to Thursday’s screening and Q&A at 7:15pm. Those unable to attend, or be admitted that night will be admitted to the following evening’s screening and Q&A event on Friday June 5th at 6:00pm.
