The Santa Fe Opera Presents: The Danish Girl – Film and Opera in Conversation

July 29 @ 6:00 pm

The 2026 Festival Season is quickly approaching and we’re setting the stage with a specially curated film
series at the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA). This series features film titles that complement the
stories coming to life at the Santa Fe Opera this summer.

To conclude the series, director of Lili Elbe James Robinson joins us to introduce a screening of The
Danish Girl
(2015). Inspired by the life of pioneering transgender artist Lili Elbe, the film traces a deeply
personal journey of identity, transformation and love, resonating with the themes explored in this
season’s American premiere.

James Robinson is Artistic Director of Opera Theatre of St. Louis and one of the most respected directors working in opera today. He has staged productions at the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and companies around the world, including several acclaimed world premieres. A frequent collaborator with Santa Fe Opera, his past productions include Vanessa, Dr. Sun Yat Sen and Così fan tutte. His work is known for its emotional depth and commitment to contemporary storytelling.
