The Odyssey – With Special St. John’s College Introduction

July 18 @ 5:30 pm

Join CCA for this special opening weekend screening of The Odyssey, as we collaborate with St. John’s College in celebrating the legacy of this enduring epic. St. John’s tutor David Carl will provide opening remarks before the screening, and create a framework for understanding the allure of this ancient poem that has fascinated people for thousands of years.

All those who attend this special Saturday night screening are welcome to attend a follow up discussion hosted on the St. John’s campus the following day on Sunday June 19.

Additionally, any St. John’s student, alumni, or those participating in a St. John’s program are eligible for a free small popcorn with their ticket purchase.

We look forward to seeing you at what is sure to be the biggest arthouse blockbuster of the summer!

The Odyssey is a big-budget adaptation of the epic Greek poem of the same name. One of the cornerstones of Western literature, it’s believed to have been composed nearly 3,000 years ago, and is traditionally attributed to the poet Homer.

Set in and around the Mediterranean Ancient World, the poem and the film follow Odysseus, the heroic king of the Greek kingdom of Ithaca. After fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus begins the journey home to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus, but the meddling of the Gods and a series of adventures with sirens, cyclops, and more, turn his trip home into a 10-year fight for survival, and a struggle to reclaim his kingdom from those who seized it in his absence.

Like all of Nolan’s films at this point in his career, The Odyssey is a star-packed affair, featuring several frequent Nolan collaborators and some newcomers to his casts. Matt Damon stars in the film as Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway plays his wife, Penelope, and Tom Holland plays Odysseus’s son, Telemachus. Lupita Nyong’o co-stars as the mythical Helen of Troy, and also plays Helen’s sister, Clytemnestra. Zendaya will play the Greek Goddess Athena, and the supporting cast also includes Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, and more.”  -Matthew Jackson
