That They May Face The Rising Sun

June 5

Based on internationally acclaimed Irish author John McGahern’s award winning novel of the same name, That They May Face the Rising Sun is a vivid evocation of nature, humanity and life itself, set in a 1980’s rural community in Ireland.

Joe and Kate Ruttledge have returned from London to live and work among the small, close-knit community near to where Joe grew up. Now deeply embedded in life around the lake, the drama of a year in their lives and those of the memorable characters around them unfolds through the rituals of work, play and the passing seasons as this enclosed world becomes an everywhere.

For the past several years, winning the “best film” award from the Irish Film & Television Academy has meant you’ve punched your ticket to America. From an Irish film industry that has grown dramatically over the past few decades, the features “Small Things Like These,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and “An Cailín Ciúin” (“The Quiet Girl”) have all brought Celtic charm to moviegoers stateside.

Now comes the IFTA’s 2024 best film winner, “That They May Face the Rising Sun.” Directed by Pat Collins, who has made a raft of documentaries and three features, the film captures the tail end of traditional rural life in Ireland in the 1980s, before the country belatedly modernized.

Based on the final novel of the same name by the Irish writer John McGahern (published inAmerica in 2002 as “By the Lake”), the film follows Joe and Kate, an artistic couple who have moved back to a tiny farming community in the west of Ireland after spending years in London.Their emerging bonds with the town’s aging citizenry evoke a timeless kind of human connection.

“I do like the whole idea of people getting lost in the world and feeling that they’re a part of it,” said Collins, the director, on a recent video call. “I’m always trying to make it kind of meditative, I suppose.”
