Rules of the Game

June 10 @ 6:00 pm

Playing in the CCA Cinema

In collaboration with Santa Fe Opera’s From Screen to Stage film series for the 2024 season

Curation by the Santa Fe Opera creative teams:

This 1939 film classic was chosen by Louisa Muller, the director of this season’s production of La Traviata, who is setting her lavish new production in 1939 Paris – the same year depicted in Renoir’s film. Muller is reframing La Traviata as a memory play, and watched The Rules of the Game, which takes place in the French countryside, as one of her cinematic inspirations to visualize bringing this 19th century classic into the 20th century on the opera stage.

About the film:

A bourgeois life in France at the onset of World War II, as the rich and their poor servants meet up at a French chateau. André is having an affair with Christine, whose husband Robert is himself hiding a mistress. Christine’s married maid is romantically entangled with the local poacher. At a hunting party, the passions of servants and aristocrats dangerously collide.

“An undisputed masterpiece and a one-of-a-kind experience: a wise, poignant, wryly funny, tenderly open-hearted comedy-drama that shrewdly portrays a microcosm of French society on the brink of WWII.” – William Arnold

“This magical and elusive work, which always seems to place second behind Citizen Kane in polls of great films, is so simple and so labyrinthine, so guileless and so angry, so innocent and so dangerous, that you can’t simply watch it, you have to absorb it.” – Roger Ebert
