Renesan: The History of Imitation Humans: Myth, Novels, Film, and the “Real Thing”

November 3, 2025 @ 10:00 am

This Renesan Course is 1 session. The ticket purchased below is for the 1 session.

Renesan Course Information:

Humans have been fascinated by imitative art since prehistoric times. But why? Why isn’t what we actually see or know adequate as is? These kinds of questions grow especially confounding when we consider our fascination with imitation humans. We’ll explore the evolution of imitation humans from ancient myth (e.g., Pygmalion) to novels (e.g., Frankenstein) to film (uncountable). And then we’ll turn to the present, when the manufacture of a “real” imitation human seems right around the corner.

About The Instructor:

Tony Jackson just retired as professor of English at UNC Charlotte, where he taught literature, film, and narrative theory. Holder of a Ph.D. degree from UCLA, he has published academic essays on issues of imitation for many years and has taught film classes for Renesan.
