Pre-Code Classics: The Story of Temple Drake

October 8 @ 11:00 am

One of the darkest and most shocking of the Pre-Code films, The Story of Temple Drake was based on William Faulkner’s pulp novel Sanctuary, with Miriam Hopkins as a sexually adventurous wild child who is viciously assaulted by a gang of bootleggers and forced into prostitution. Hopkins gives a fascinating performance and avoids just about every cliché she might have fallen back on.

Pre-Code Classics will include a 25-minute introduction from CCA Cinema Director Matthew Cannella. Matthew is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts with an emphasis on Cinema Critical Studies. He is the programmer for CCA’s robust film program, including the presentation series Sundays with Hitch. He is a student of St. John’s College Santa Fe Masters program where he is a contributing member to their film discussions.
