Los Olvidados

November 13 @ 6:00 pm

Playing in the CCA Cinema

As part of the week-long Godfrey Reggio Retrospective, CCA hosts a one-time-only screening of the film that inspired Godfrey Reggio to become a filmmaker – the Spanish director Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados (aka The Young and the Damned). Before the screening, Paul Barnes will give a talk on why the film so deeply affected Reggio and will incorporate a biographical portrait of the Santa Fe-based filmmaker.

“Nearly two decades after the surrealist scandals of The Andalusian Dog (Un chien andalou) and The Age of Gold (L’age d’or), Luis Buñuel had a major international comeback with Los Olvidados, which remains one of the world’s most influential films in its unsentimental yet vivid, sometimes surreal depiction of impoverished youths in Mexico City.

In the story of a juvenile delinquent who reunites with his gang after breaking out of prison – unflinching, desperate violence becomes riveting visual poetry with lyrical experimental flourishes. Buñuel won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival for this film, which all but reignited his career, leading to two decades of increasingly daring work. This film was an epiphany for Godfrey Reggio and helped him realize the psychological power of the moving image and that cinematic art had become a powerful mind-altering tool.”
