La Mesa Event at CCA

May 23 @ 5:00 pm

A long table, a single microphone, and a community excited to listen – this is La Mesa, a new type of storytelling event! Six voices share true, 5–7 minute lived-experience stories, followed by short responses from table-mates, concluding in a conversation with the audience. La Mesa emphasizes listening, reflection, and connection across cultures, ages, and experiences.

La Mesa is produced by Joe Lambert, storyteller, community artist, educator, and founder of the
internationally renowned Storycenter. Partners for this event include the Center for
Contemporary Arts Poetry Program and the Santa Fe Public Library, with support from the
Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry.

Aar “Air” Jawson is a Santa Fe comedian, writer, artist, and producer who uses absurd humor to get at the tender, anxious, and all-too-human parts of life. Drawing on years as a public school teacher, solo backpacker, and itinerant adventurer, he creates comedy and storytelling shows locally and has opened for Kevin Nealon, Jordan Cerminara, and David Testroet.

Alejandro Jimenez is a poet and writer from Colima, Mexico, now based in New Mexico, whose work explores identity, race, immigration, masculinity, and memory. Featured by TIME as one of 80 Mexican artists shaping contemporary culture, he is also the subject of a PBS American Masters: In the Making documentary and works as a middle and high school counselor.

Sofia Salazar is a Santa Fe writer and storyteller rooted in six generations of oral tradition in Northern New Mexico, whose work explores generational trauma, healing, and querencia. Their poems and nonfiction have appeared in Santa Fe Magazine and Scars: An Anthology, and their series Querencia will be featured in the 2026 [TabLe] exhibition at the City of Santa Fe Community Gallery.

Two free story development workshops will be held prior to the event to assist with story crafting. Community members who participate in the workshops will be considered for the performance.
