CCA Amplified: ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ with Gregg Turner

CCA Amplified is a new, monthly music and film series presented by CCA and Lost Padre Records kicking off with the intimate Roky Erickson documentary You’re Gonna Miss Me (2005). The film will be followed by stories and an acoustic performance by local legend Gregg Turner; songwriter, musician, and early punk pioneer who got his start opening for Roky Erickson in 1978.

About You’re Gonna Miss Me: Filmmaker Keven McAlester explores the life of legendary vocalist and songwriter Roger Kynard “Roky” Erickson, who, during the ‘60s, fronted the influential rock band 13th Floor Elevators. Following extensive psychedelic drug use and a stint in a mental hospital, Roky spent the greater part of the last four decades suffering from schizophrenia. McAlester finds Roky living with his brother, who has aided in his recovery and encouraged his return to music.

About Gregg Turner: Gregg Turner is a founding member of 1976 band, VOM, which would become the seminal first-wave L.A. punk band, Angry Samoans, who were active through the 1980s. Turner is also noted for his various contributions to music critiscm, with a twelve-year tenure at the iconic magazine Creem from 1976–1988. Turner moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1993, where he currently resides, and has two teenage daughters, Nico and Scarlet. He was a tenured mathematics professor at New Mexico Highlands University until recently retiring. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Claremont Graduate University in 1991. Turner has remained musically active as a solo performer and recently published his memoir, Hallucinations from Hell: Confessions of an Angry Samoan (Rare Bird, 2021), illustrated by Gary Panter.
