Cabin Music (film & musical performance)

September 29, 2024 @ 6:00 pm

Co-presented by CCA and Chatter North:

ONE NIGHT ONLY, WITH FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE!

This event includes a film screening followed by a solo piano performance by filmmaker James Carson.

After walking away from the New England Conservatory in Boston, James Carson backpacks overland from Spain to Japan. At the center of the story is the unusual off-grid cabin in the Canadian wilderness that James designs and builds by hand upon his return. It is here, away from everything, that the lived experiences and myriad threads interweave and a new form of music emerges.

Cabin Music is New York pianist and filmmaker James Carson’s two-decade effort to transform the ways in which music is created and experienced by audiences. A childhood prodigy, Carson’s first orchestral works were performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at age sixteen. His subsequent studies at the New England Conservatory, with giants including Cecil Taylor, Joe Maneri, and the poet Robert Creeley, led him to a dramatic life change: he walked away from music to backpack overland from Spain to Japan, then built a remote strawbale cabin in the pursuit of creating a new form of music. Drawing from his isolated time in his cabin, Carson’s performances remove his own intentions by receiving and channeling all forces and energies within and beyond the performance space. He, and his award-winning, self-directed feature documentary film debut, Cabin Music, now tour internationally, initiating audiences into the project’s global origins.

“I spent the last two decades traveling and working on farms, building the cabin, and practicing in it, then forgetting everything I know about the piano, with a single aim: to create music and film that come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Music and cinema are a mysterious, communal, unifying force. As global change continues to accelerate, it is my belief that the power of single notes, heard deeply, will only become more powerful.” -James Carson

About the artist: Pianist James Carson has developed a new form of music and over the last twelve years has produced and directed Cabin Music, a feature film, to share it with the world. When James attended the New England Conservatory his studies with Joe Maneri, Cecil Taylor, and the poet Robert Creeley led him to a dramatic life change: he walked away from music and spent two years backpacking and farming overland from Spain to Japan. After his return to Northern Alberta, Canada, he then spent five years designing, building, and practicing in a remote strawbale cabin. The musical result was multilayered, detailed, meditative, and harmonious. “I wanted to play the whole piano at once,” says Carson, “in the same way that a single breeze can cause the entire forest to dance and tremble in unison.” He lives in New York City and returns to his cabin regularly.
