Ask E. Jean

August 21

ASK E. JEAN is the thrilling story of E. Jean Carroll’s life, from her early days as Miss Cheerleader USA to her rise as a trailblazing journalist, author, and beloved advice columnist. Carroll broke barriers as the first female editor at Esquire, Playboy, and Outside, helping to redefine women’s roles in media with her sharp wit and fearless voice. In recent years, she reignited public discourse by standing up to power, becoming the only woman to beat Donald Trump twice in court, and sparking a national conversation about truth, accountability, and resilience. This film is a portrait of an indomitable woman who proved it’s never too late to reclaim your voice, rewrite your story, and change the world.

In June of 2019, E Jean Carroll graced the cover of New York Magazine where an excerpt from her book What Do We Need Men For was published. The story she told was of Trump sexually assaulting her in the Bergdorf Goodman dressing room and with that she instantly joined the ranks of a growing list of “Trump accusers”. Though the facts of the story weren’t altogether new, the voice recounting it was strikingly so.

E. Jean’s writing was funny, bawdy, vivid and brutally honest about how women of her generation navigated the predations of men. They laughed instead of screamed. They brushed off the hands. They buried the memories. They didn’t go to the police. They blamed themselves.

This film is about one remarkable woman’s reckoning with her past as she became the only person to beat Trump twice in court. I wanted audiences to experience her transformation viscerally – we are with her in depositions; in the mid-1990s when the attack occurred; and as she reflects on the years of advice she gave. It is her hilarious, inimitable and honest voice that leads us through it all. The purpose is not only to believe her, but understand her. It’s about storytelling – the power we gain when we tell our stories to each other and to the world.
