DIY Electronics for Artists July 29th-August 21st Tuesdays and Thursdays
The history of artists and musicians using unique electronic devices is long and rich: including John Cage, Nicolas Collins, Woody Vasulka and Jessica Rylan. This course will guide the artist/musician through the history of custom and re-purposed electronics for music, installation, and new-media projects. Students will also learn, through hands-on exercises, basic soldering skills, mounting and assembly of one-of-a-kind components and the fine art of “hacking into” a device (say, a video game circuit) to process information in ways not intended by the manufacturers.

VideoDelic Improvisation August 4th-20th Mondays and Wednesdays
Group improvisation has been a mainstay of creative exploration for musicians working in the areas of jazz, new music and electronics for decades. Rarely have New Media artists exploited image- and sound-making tools for the same ends. We will explore both the history of improvisation in music, from John Cage to John Coltrane to Pink Floyd, and the history of using real-world tools and objects to control computer-generated video and sound. The final project of the class will be an ensemble-style group improvisation new media work using image and sound. We may even include a machine or a computer as a member of the ensemble! Students will learn the basics of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and the dynamic, real-time video processing software IMX (available free at www.image-ine.org).
Prerequisite: Students must have working knowledge of Mac computers and Mac OS 10.4 or 10.5.

Everyone has their own favorite music video, but what’s it like to make one? Working in small groups and with local artists, students will be guided through the process of shooting and editing their own original music videos.

In this class students will work in small groups to create an original soundtrack for a predetermined short film or scene from a film. Students will learn sophisticated listening skills and professional approaches to field recording and sound design.

This class is a beginning workshop aimed at youth interested in digital filmmaking. We will cover the basic elements of video production in a collaborative environment. Students will learn about and work with broadcast quality video cameras and the industry standard editing software Final Cut Pro.

Electronic Music Composition for Teens July 21st-25th
Musicians, composers, and engineers have been producing music with electronic or electromechanical means since the early 1900’s. In this class we’ll review the history of electronic music and basic and intermediate methods and techniques to produce original electronic songs, compositions, or soundscapes. No previous knowledge of musical theory is required.
